Don't give your password to anyone, don't send passwords anywhere
unencrypted, don't trust websites unless they have SSL certificates, don't
trust SSL certificates unless they're signed by a trusted party, don't
trust them anyway because pretty much anyone can buy a certificate and it
proves fairly little other than that the site you're talking to is the
site you think you're talking to, don't run software you don't trust,
don't trust any software except what you've written yourself, don't trust
that unless you wrote the compiler yourself, don't connect to a network
ever and don't even think about having a modem anywhere near your
computer.

Admittedly some of that is /somewhat/ paranoid, but it's still true - the
only way to guarantee that you're not compromised in any way is to trust
nobody. How safe you are depends on what lengths you go to before trusting
someone, and how many people you trust.
