Very strange indeed.  Increasing the colour depth of your screen should have
had the opposit effect, since you are using up more of the bandwidth on the
custom chip bus, which is around 7Mb/sec, leaving less bandwidth for the
other custom chips to access ram.  Of course, if anyone knows any
different...
