LOL!

Well, it's appropriate I suppose..   I don't think I'd be the first
(or last) person on this list to object to the idea of making emails
in html - Anything like the above only encourages it :(

(Before I get flamed: I don't mind html in itself - as a tool to do
web pages.  What I object to is the idea of downloading a 20K email
with 100K of images attached to provide a beautifully laid-out
webpage-like mail which says little more than "Hi". )

So, is there a way which works on "all platforms" of making emphasis
or inflexion of the text in an email?  Or just some accepted way of
representing it without affecting the typeface?

PS: I assume the two dashes making a little bar as above is also not
