I used to have a similar problem with a cordless phone. I'd leave the
phone upstairs and be oblivious to it ringing.

There's a program on Aminet called RingDetect which should do exactly
what you need, although I no longer use it because...

... I have STFax running all the time and have it run a script from the Ring
hook. This script uniconifies STFax so I can see who's calling in the
status window (damn MUI's all-or-nothing iconification), logs the phone
number to a file (in case I miss the call) and sends break commands to
my CD and MP3 players to save me having to turn them down before
answering.
