I've found that playing around with fancy init strings does more harm
than good. If your baisc init is any more than AT&F\n I'd try cutting
it down. Unless, of course, you've added it for a specific reason.

This unpredicatability, especially the bit about lines overwriting,
sounds as if the comms to your modem aren't quite right. I use a surf
squirrel and found that either it or the modem didn't like any
connection rate between 33600 and 115200, so its set to 115200 which
is well within the ability of both bits of kit. You could check the
cabling for loose connectors etc. And you might want to try changing
the "command delay" factor in GenesisPrefs ->modems/TAs to a higher
number. I use the default of 20. A higher number will fractionally
slow down the dial process, but will not affect anything else.

I use UKOnline regularly. While it is not as good as it used to be I
can definitely connect every time. About 1 time in 20 I'll get an
engaged tone, but its only ever once or twice failed to negotiate the
connection. I usually get around 49333 connect.

Hope that helps,

Ian
