Now there's an idea, "equity release" on software and cars.
There's offers for older people who are homeowners, get money on the house,
live in it and the financier takes the house when you die.
So users keep the NC2 cds and when they die, lawyers will rummage through
their software collection and return the cd. Fair enough.
Seriously, philosophically, the relationship with publishers who frequently
upgrade is a "rental" one. It is media independant.
People who buy the NC2 are subletting and as different keyfiles become
needed have to upgrade to get full rights.
The NC2 subletters would not buy the full NC3 for financial reasons so are
not a financial loss to the publisher (unless they sell NC2)
There is a problem in the market that publishers have to work on
margin * sales = income
While for consumers the price asked is in many countries more than a month's
living expenses or for younger users, many weeks of pocket money.
