You don't *have* to give it back. The upgrade is an option.

As I said elsewhere, you don't buy the media, you buy the right to use
it. If you download Voyage ftp.vapor.com, you haven't got any physical
product, but you can use it as the full version because you have a
licence to do so. If you registered Voyager separately, instead of
buying NCC, you don't even have the licence on physical media, it's only
a keyfile sent by email. Does that mean you are free to do whatever you
want with Voyager and its keyfile? Of course not, because only you are
licence to use that keyfile.

Don't be bloody stupid? Do you think the garage would give you a part
exchange on the old car and then let you keep it?
