They're a standardised way mail software should separate a signature
from the rest of the mail's message body. I don't think MD2 can, or
even should, remove them.
Unfortunately, a lot of modern mail packages completely miss them out.
I discovered just how many do when I had to write a mail<->web
conferencing system a couple of years ago, and needed to strip out
sigs from mails re-posted to the web pages for neatness and
consistency. Without the -- separator on most mails it was a feature
that ended up being left out.
Sorry that doesn't help get rid of them, but hopefully you'll
understand the reason for them.
