Gentlemen, may I have your attention, please?
Thank you. I have noticed in recent months that some threads have
contained a lot of unpleasantness, due to misunderstanding or
whatever. Without meaning to sound rude, this really gets up my nose.
The most memorable occasion was over Christmas with the MD-II Y2K
bugfix "problem". So, in light of these incidents, I propose a
Netconnect mailing list code of conduct. The suggested terms of this
are outlined below:
1) Be patient and tolerant with everyone. There may be language/
dialect issues which cause confusion. Offence is not always meant, and
a polite response rather than instant flame will often address such
issues.
2) If flamed, either reply privately, or ignore the comment. Not
everyone wishes to read other people's arguments.
3) If a bug or problem cannot be satisfactorily answered by anyone
on the list, then contact the *author of the program*, not Chris
Wiles, not Active, and not Vapor. After all, who fixes the bugs in the
end? Olli got his Y2K bugfix for NC2 versions of Microdot within a day
of actually being directly informed. Whether or not you feel that it
is the distributor's responsibilty to organise bug fixes, remember
that these are not centrally developed and have more in common with a
collection of high-quality shareware than a package like, say MS
Office, where all the programs therein are devloped in-house.
4) Remember that the others on this list are people - that includes
Chris Wiles. Some of the things said to and about Chris at times were
seriously offensive, and yet still some people wondered why he stopped
replying to this list for several weeks. Treat a person down the pub
like that, and most people would probably give you a good beating.
If you wish to debate any of these points, feel that I have missed
anything, or generally disagree with the idea, please mail me
personally at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
On the other hand, if you feel that this is better as a public thread,
then reply publicly.
Finally, please note that this is not an attack on any one person
about any one issue. I have used examples, but mean no offence by
them. I'm simply getting tired of dowloading 80 or so postings and
finding half of them to be debates or arguments that should really be
conducted via private communications.
Thank you for taking the time to read this (admittedly long) post.
Jimbo
