It might be a retrain failure. Run AmTerm (if you have it) and type AT&V1
It should display a list of numbers downloaded from your modem from your last
browsing session (however short it was.) The first line will give the reason for
the disconnection.
BTW, if you haven't used AmTerm before, you may need to go into settings and
make sure that the Modem/Init box doesn't have ATZ in it. Also, make sure the
Serial/Device is set the the appropriate device.

Are you using the internal serial port, or an add-on serial card, such as
Hypercom or Silver Surfer? Reason I ask is because that happens to me if I use
my Hypercom, but not the internal serial port.
