but its much more than just a line drop - it crashes the machine.  And quite often the 
guru doesnt appear - the hard drive starts up as though its booting then just sitts 
there. i then have to do a soft-reboot to make the guru appear and follow-on with a 
normal reboot.

So its more likely an exception error.
