Hi John, On 05-May-00, you wrote:

Don't worry, I don't really object to general discussion of relevant things,
it's just non stop moaning/status reports on a random shit ISP that I
dislike.

Just to make this a bit clearer to John and everyone else since I've noticed
a lot of people here and elsewhere a bit confused.

You *collect* mail via the POP3 protocol. Usually (as John says) it's
possible to pick up your mail from anywhere, i.e. you can dial into
Freeserve or some other ISP and then collect your RedHotAnt mail.

However, you *send* mail using the SMTP protocol. You will *not* usually be
able to send mail to one ISP's mail server whilst connected to another.
However 99% of ISPs have an SMTP "smarthost" (as they are called) and so
all you have to do is make sure you send it out using the SMTP server of
the ISP you're connected to.

(There is a special case where some users of Demon Internet and old software
actually *get* mail via SMTP but that's highly unusual)
