It is the quiet retiring stiff upper lip which makes it seem that way!

Even using a "call up, grab, log off" technique massive phone bills were
inevitable. For people who have not moved onto these new services, there is
a minimum charge of 5p, 7-8 cents even for failed connections or to pick up
one email!

The issue is slightly different, redhotant is the new child of a free (as in
no subscription) ISP. They are limiting themselves to 75k users, so are
pretty small and are having teething troubles. NTL are a large company (the
winners in the UK cable industry consolidtaion battle). They are quoted on,
I think, Nasdaq and Microsoft have a large shareholding :)
Most of the free ISP's have various strings attached to the offer.

Cool, those are coming out in the UK sometime, but a phone connection is
needed for uploads.
