It's more a case of terminology evolving. Firewalls used to be separate
systems that both connected and protected a network to the outside
world. With personal/home networks becoming more commonplace, it makes
sense to have a firewall and gateway on a working machine. MiamiDx's
firewall certainly protects the host computer as well as the rest of the
network, whether the Windies product does the same is anyone's guess.

However, these are real firewalls in the traditional sense as they only
filter one way, incoming, whereas as a full firewall also prevents
outbound accesses that don't fit the rules.

You don't need a firewall to protect a network from outside attacks. As
Andrew said, don't run any services you don't need. Also protect any
ports that are running services needed by the network.
