Hi Joel,
thanks for posting the info.
For the many folks still using ND3 and ND4...what can you tell us about the
plans to support those platforms? Many of us have avoided upgrading to ND5
because of the uncertainity of the product's future. Are there any plans to keep
supporting these versions a little longer than normal? (to keep us happy and
reward us for sticking with ND!)
Thanks.
Janet

Subject: [ND] ND for two full years

Hi all,
NetDynamics 5 is slated for upgrade to the iPlanet Application Server
next year. All this means is that new customers will buy iPlanet.
All existing customers have full support for ND5 until 2002.
This includes technical support by phone, email, and website;
it includes professional services, consulting, and training;
it includes all our partner services like migration help from
www.intrasolvconsulting.com and hosting from www.breakaway.com.
In fact, it includes absolutely everything that you have now.
You will have two full years to gradually move your projects from ND5 to
the iPlanet Appserver. I want to emphasize: you have two full years.
Some developers will want to look at the iPlanet App Server sooner, for
things like the Enterprise Java Bean (EJB) capabilities. This is great,
and you can get started right now by learning about EJB and using the
EJB features in ND5. Improved EJB support in NetDynamics is coming
asap when we release the next rev of ND5, which will be ND 5.02.
Everyone here should definitely download ND 5.02 when it's ready;
we will be posting release announcements and notes on this list.
To help developers, we are creating new EJB migration guides
and new tools to help with the conversion to the EJB frameworks.
This will include more information about how to upgrade from
ND3 to ND4, from ND4 to ND5, from the CSp framework to EJB,
and eventually from ND5 to iPlanet when it is ready to use.
We are also training our partners in migration from ND5 to iPlanet,
and in the new Java technolgies like EJB, JSP, and the rest of J2EE.
Our partners are joining us in our worldwide consulting engagements,
and work directly with our customers to create the migration guides.
In my opinion, we have four of the best NetDynamics developers
in the world working on these migration guides. Sun is making
a very strong investment in learning how to do things smoothly
and gradually, because we know our customers will need this.
You will be able to see our results within a month or two,
and all of the information will be available on our web.
----
In summary, NetDynamics 5 will be around for a long, long time.
It is a proven technology, with good rapid-development tools,
lots of developers, lots of consultants, and lots of partners.
You are perfectly safe developing and deploying in ND5,
and will have two full years before you need to upgrade.
When you do choose to upgrade, there will plenty of help
from Sun and also from all of our NetDynamics partners.
If you (or your manager) need an official person from Sun
to provide details about the support policies and maintenance,
send email to Bill Lazar, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Bill was
in ND support for years, and is now our ND product manager.
I hope this helps to hear. As always, send your feedback!
Cheers,
Joel
