The other workaround for this is:

globals [g1 g2 g3 ...]

to clear-most
  let keep-g1 g1
  let keep-g2 g2
  let keep-g3 g3
  ...
  clear-all
  set g1 keep-g1
  set g2 keep-g2
  set g3 keep-g3
  ...
end

suggests this workaround as well as Jason's ("Another possible
workaround is to change your model's setup procedure to use more
specific clearing commands to clear only what you want cleared").
