Dear John
Thanks for your swift response.
I had not thought to move the errant fonts out of !Fonts but I have
tried your suggestion and can now get Netsurf to load.
I took the time to carefully look at what was in my !Fonts and think
that over the years, my collection of fonts has been passed from one
machine to another and not really been checked out, mainly because I
had no problems. I now think that the errant Frutiger Font and its
mates are in fact not native RISCOS fonts or have been deposited there
by some other program and are not proper working versions. I suspect
that RiScript may also have added some odd fonts in the past.
I have moved out and isolated quite a few font files and unless a
program complains, I will probably not miss them.
Netsurf was clearly not happy with these fonts and decided to freeze
the computer but perhaps an error message would help. I do note that
when starting Netsurf from cold, the scan window briefly appears and
seems to stop at the Frutiger point but almost without any further
hesitation, Netsurf loads very quickly. It seems that the scan has a
memory but ignores the previous problem.
I still have to fully test out Netsurf, but initial visits to sample
sites are encouraging. The rendering is crisp with proper fonts and in
some cases, the site is better than on Windows Mozilla. I think that
only the lack of javascript will prevent me from using it for
everything.
Thanks for your help and I will keep a regular eye on the home page
for developments.
