Subject: Adobe [PDF] and DOS

In case this hasn't been answered over the past week: In a word, Karen, you're *not*
crazy. In other words, we have a problem here.

This is a frequently recurring topic on blind-oriented lists; here's what I've pieced
together.

Back when everybody was rushing to present text more attractively, MS invented rich
text, some idiot invented HTML-mail, and Adobe came up with PDF. It was intended as a
way to spice up documents, make sure columns and tables could be viewed correctly, and
perhaps to insert small diagrams.

The folks at Adobe succeeded too well. It is possible to simply take a picture or
scan of a document and create from it a PDF file. As with a faxed document, it
contains no ASCII. So, there's nothing to convert.

Several blind hams have commented that this is indeed the case with various FCC forms
available, in PDF, from the FCC Web site. Really, there are two types of PDF:
convertible and non-convertible. HTH.
