Hi, Leo,
Make sure you are using either the latest release version, or the newer
1.13 beta version of Net-Tamer, since it does a better job of handling the
really large newsgroup lists. There are now close to 100,000 newsgroups,
and many ISP servers have them all, or most of them.
When you tell it to update group list, and save that by pressing Z and
leaving the program, when you dial in and select one of the options that
includes get newsgroups, you will get a big list of groups downloaded to
your nettamer directory where you have told it to put files pertaining to
your account. That file is called usegrps.lst and may be quite large.
When you then chose from the reader program to select newsgroups, that
file is sorted and converted into a usenet.for file.
When the list comes back to you, you can use the alt-F key combination to
"find" a text string. Enter the name of the newsgroup, or part of the
name you want to find. The program should find it and then place the
cursor on the name of the group, or on the first group name that contains
the text string you indicated. Press the enter key when it asks for the
group name correct. Then when it asks for the filename for the group,
where your messages from that group will be saved, give it a filename up
to 8 characters with no extension. Then it wants to know if you want to
download all messages automatically from the group, Yes, or No.
Then it wants each of two lines for how you want to sign any messages you
send to the group.
The next time you log on to the server and select one of the work options
that includes getting newsgroups, it will try to request messages from
that group.
Remember that newsgroups die just like mailing lists, and the lists of
active groups doe not always get updated in a timely fashion.
Have fun!
