I am not sure this is entirely true. Quite a number of community radio
broadcasters use free software like Audacity for their programme production,
though we should probably encourage more to follow suit. However, as some of
my more tech-savvy community radio associates point out, some of the free
software (listed below) require a geek-level understanding of FOSS, and
that's simply not going to work in in most CR stations, especially in rural
India.

This is very good news. I hope Dr. Yadav will be able to test out some of
the software listed below and share his experience with us.

Well, 'Vanya' isn't really a community radio station -- they had applied for
a license a year ago, but there was some issue about Vanya being a
government-NGO and therefore not eligible for a CR license.

I am not sure all the products listed below have been properly tested yet --
it would be great if someone could do so.

To start with, there are quite a number of free software for audio listed on

Here's some of they stuff that may be particularly useful for audio
production and play-out (though one should also look for free software for
other purposes like audio logging as well).

*Audacity:* Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing
sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and

*Campcaster: *Campcaster is a free and open source radio management software.
It has been designed for a Linux environment, but could possibly be used on

*ZaraRadio: *ZaraRadio is a free radio automation system (a 'playout'
system). It operates on Windows (but not on Vista). It's not stated whether
