The abstract of the patent ends:

The word-processing document is stored in a single XML file.
Additionally, manipulation of word-processing documents may be done on
computing devices that do not include the word-processor itself.

Here we have:
1. the document that the word processor can understand
2. the document that any xml processor can understand, given the DTD
3. the document that any string processor can understand
4. the document that any text processor can "understand"

Since you ask about arguments against such concurrent use, maybe they
will involve some kind of information loss during handling. Given that
we call something a word processor document, we can ask what are the
processors that process this into another word processor document.
Here the format/standard prescribes the utility of the document
in-spite of a specific processor, by prescribing criteria of
well-formedness. So multiple standards could mean there are multiple
well-formedness criteria that a document satisfies, for different
processing ends but in the "multiple standards" discussion here the
meaning is more: Is the document well-formed according to any one of
the standards so that loss-less processors can be provisioned/availed.
