Indeed, the need for Free Software at every level cannot be overlooked.
My happiness was the result of seeing unexpected positive step from
someone like whatsapp. It doesn't take us all the way to privacy, but it
is a step in the right direction.
Now already there are Free Software applications for using whatsapp
network and if they make it federated (I'm doubtful about it though),
we'll have an option of using a service of our choice too.
Jabber is the decentralized solution and ind.ie is the peer to peer
solution.
I am suprised no one mentioned Telegram ?
Telegram Is the new alternative.. Client code is GPL2, server is
currently proprietary with a promise that will be open sourced eventually.
