There are at least two purposes:
- SXCE is still the only supported platform for building (at least)
the ON consolidation. It's reportedly possible to build ON on
OpenSolaris, but it requires grabbing some SysV packages from
Nevada, and the process is just not supported.
- The tools used in OpenSolaris (notably IPS) are not yet done, and
not yet integrated. It's a little hard to throw that last switch
before that happens.
Internally, we still build Nevada, and all (or at least most) of the
WOS construction process is still in place for it. Every two weeks,
the consolidations (such as OS/Net -- ON) do a build and produce
standard System V packages as a result. These get integrated into the
WOS, which produces the bootable DVD images. That's what gets
released as SXCE.
The Indiana team grabs most of the packages from the Nevada process
(minus non-redistributable ones), does some tweaking (because they
have local, unintegrated changes), and then converts them to IPS
format. That's what gets released as the OpenSolaris distribution.
At some point in the future, the extra integration process into Nevada
(and Nevada/SXCE itself) should go away. For that to happen,
OpenSolaris will have to become the supported platform for building,
which in turn depends on doing "something" about those
non-redistributable packages, and the Indiana-specific changes will
need to be reviewed and integrated as usual.

Aren't we all? ;-}
