Just wanted to close this thread.

It turns out the SAS SFF 8087 cable that was interfacing between the
backplane and harddrive controller was bad.  Amazing though Solaris actually
was able to handle the faults that it was generating.  Other operating
systems we tried couldn't stay stable at all and would have full OS lockup
and kernel panics.
