After I sent that last message, I remembered that, after failing to
connect via FTP, I tried ftp'ing from another machine on my mini-lan,
and downloading the file it was requesting; that worked. The log entry
I sent was the log of _that_ request. The other requests apparently
didn't get logged at all. In addition to xferlog (which I attached in
its entirety, consisting of only one line), I have xferlog .1, .2, .3,
and .4, all of 0 bytes.
The problem is that when I try to install via FTP, the client
machine shows on the screen "retrieving base/hdlist" and then returns to
the info screen (where i enter the server address, directory, etc.). It
doesn't display an error message there, or on console 3 (it just says
"ftping base/hdlist to a fd") or 4. I've specified the server by IP
address, given it the directory of /mnt/cdrom/RedHat, and entered my
username and password on the server machine.
Just for the sake of variety, I also tried mounting the CD on a
win98 box and sharing it; when I do that I get "host unknown" errors
even when I specify it by IP address. I also have the same problem when
I try installing RedHat 5.2.
As a last resort, I guess I could take the hard drive out of the
client machine, and temporarily install it in a machine with a CD-ROM
drive, but I'd much rather be able to install it over the network.
Again, thanks for any help in straightening out this issue!
