Turns out I'm having the same trouble from power on, but I didn't pay it
a lot of attention, because a reboot would cause the system to come up
normally.  I have been noticing it more because recently I've been
powering up alot; and that's when it occurs.

I don't think the cause of my problem is the same as yours, however.  I
have both an initrd statement in lilo.conf and an initrd image in boot. 
I'll have to power down and see if I can replicate the error so I can
write it down; the error doesn't make it to var/log.
