Since the recent changes I have lost the functionality I had. The first sign was last evening when I discovered that Micky could no longer log on at all (nothing shows up in her Network Neighbourhood and she can't be pinged by anyone) and Andy was apparently logging in as Guest. I do not know whether he was logging as Guest before, as I had not found out how to check.
I ran the tests specified last evening using the connection to Andy, being unable to find Micky, and expecting to find the problem this morning, which I have failed to do. Syslog gave the following errors Aug 1 09:51:25 anne-linux nmbd[3508]: [2002/08/01 09:51:25, 0] nmbd/nmbd_incomingrequests.c:process_name_registration_request(228) Aug 1 09:51:25 anne-linux nmbd[3508]: process_name_registration_request: unicast name registration request received for name ANDY<03> from IP 192.168.0.20 on subnet UNICAST_SUBNET. Error - should be sent to WINS server I then re-enabled the WINS server, backtracking in the hope of finding where the problem started. Now I have: Aug 1 11:55:24 anne-linux samba: smbd startup succeeded Aug 1 11:55:24 anne-linux samba: nmbd startup succeeded Aug 1 11:55:24 anne-linux nmbd[9119]: [2002/08/01 11:55:24, 0] nmbd/asyncdns.c:start_async_dns(148) Aug 1 11:55:24 anne-linux nmbd[9119]: started asyncdns process 9120 Aug 1 11:55:24 anne-linux nmbd[9119]: [2002/08/01 11:55:24, 0] nmbd/nmbd_winsserver.c:initialise_wins(220) Aug 1 11:55:24 anne-linux nmbd[9119]: Discarding invalid wins.dat file [VERSION 1 247838] Aug 1 11:55:28 anne-linux nmbd[9119]: [2002/08/01 11:55:28, 0] nmbd/nmbd_responserecordsdb.c:find_response_record(236) Aug 1 11:55:28 anne-linux nmbd[9119]: find_response_record: response packet id 3652 received with no matching record. The only copy of this I can find is in a cache directory. Is it reading info from somewhere else? where perhaps it is not correctly formatted? Anne
