Changed the security settings as you suggested: Security / Basic (Page-tab)
/ security-textfield=High. Anything else was leaved alone as default. No
progress, also after restart of Linux.

Yes I am still on the net occasionally by help from another OS not to be
mentioned here.

I am sure that I miss the correct setting of one or a few parameters, but
which one.

Bruno, just a guess : what are your security settings ? - Go to
Mandrake Control Center --> Security and have a look.
Mine is "high" and all the other options set to "default".
Works like a breeze. Of course you need to know what your ISP
supports (PAP / CHAP).

BTW : It seems you are on the net once again ;-)
