What kind of modem do you have and what port is it on ?
pppd daemon died unexpectedly is a generic error.
one thing to check is dns numbers in the configuration.
then log in as root or a different user and see if you get the same
results.
this will tell you if it is a permission problems (which it kinda
sounds like).
then go into netconfig and set it to allow users to establish
connections.
