   Di, are you sure the drive jumpers are set as such. Many Windoze 
computers are delivered with drives, specially CD drives set to 
"Cable select".   A setting only Bill Gates understands ;)

   According to your statement, your cdrom should be hdc with the 
jumper set to master, and your cd-rw is hdd with the jumper set to 
slave.  Altho not always absolutely neccessary, hdc should be on the 
last connector on the second channel (ide1) ribbon cable, and the 
slave, hdd should be on the middle connector.

   Have you tried any of your bootable CD's in other systems to see if 
they are in fact, bootable?
