Mis-configured DNS server, probably (either no ip for the dns servers or ip is
incorrect). In KPPP, under the DNS tab, be sure that the domain name and the
IP address of the servers is correct (yes, you MUST have a DNS server IP).
You may need a #service network restart or a reboot to get it going. (Yes,
somethimes rebooting does fix problems in Linux, in spite of what you may
have heard). If you have a samba network configured, an /etc/resolv.conf
entry could be the problem (unlikely, but could be). Your ISP's domain
should show up there as "domain whatever.com", along with an entry for it in
the "search" line--search whatever.com. Another file that used to cause
problems (but not in the 9.x series, as far as I know) is the
/etc/sysconfig/network could have an invalid entry, but with the newer
distros this is extremely unlikely.

If nothing you try works, as a last resort, delete the ~/.kde directory,
logout and then back into KDE, and remake the KPPP connection properly. I
have seen KPPP get locked-in and simply not work due to some internal error
during configuration, and this will fix that particular problem.

External modems (except for some USB) will always work with Linux.
