The Ring is Right. The tip is ground. Therefore the shaft is left.
Or in your terminology, right is shank2.
I'm not sure we are talking about the same jackplug, terminology like ring doesn't make too much sense here so I've digitalised an image to show a UK audio jackplug with the plastic sleeve pulled back to reveal the solder contact points as well as the central post that plugs into the socket..
