Derek, you are a genius at explaining things to us newbies, but for
once I have to disagree with you :

Maybe this issue has been reported many times, but only a few times
on this newbie list, as far as I can see. How many are we ? - Maybe
a hundred ? - Do we all read every post ? - I don't.

Yesterday I convinced my son-in-law to try Linux. Especially I
wanted to show him the elegance of the install process. So, having
backed everything up on my own PC, I wiped my 9.1 totally.

In went the Powerpack CD's of 9.2. Smooth as a greased lightning.
Nice desktop, nice everything - at first glance. Then I wanted to
demonstrate the "update" process. Installed (successfully) about 50
packages.

But, alas : all menus broken. No functioning icons. I thought it was
a KDE issue only, so I whacked .kde and started over. To no avail.
Then tried Gnome : same miserable result.

We spent the evening (OK, we had a decent supply of beers)
re-installing 9.2, updating, editing, update-menus, googling and
one thing and another.

We concluded, that until this issue is solved and published in the
"errata" page, it's best to avoid any updating at all. Furthermore,
we concluded : don't use "Menu Editor". Leave everything as it is.

And I have been on this list since 7.0. What do you think "Joe
Sixpack" will do ? - He never heard of a "newbie list" , let alone
an "expert list". He'll carry on, and after a gazillion installs
and "updates" he'll revert to the dark side. Claiming Mandrake
completely unusable.

I'll take bets on this.

Kaj Haulrich.
