I played around with netatalk about 1 1/2 years ago. The only
reason was the joy to copy my mp3 files from my Mac OS 9 Box
to my brand new lnux notebook.

Finally, it was not very difficult:

* edit the config files
* restarting the server
* connect from Mac to Linux box

One tipp: use a separate directory to share with the Macs, no
data dir, no music dir, no home dir, because netatalk has to
save the resouce fork of the mac files as seperate file for
each stored file.

To get it to work, use google. It's not difficult, but needs
some time to read.

        Gru / regards
