With Windows XP I have not had any components and peripherals that
where not working correctly after installing XP Pro.

With Red Hat and Mandrake I have Problems with.
wine
2 CD burners = 1 locks up the system the other would not read.
3 cdroms = where not detected I could not find any linux info for
these
3 modems = 1 U.S. Robotics 56k Fax modem. 2 = older modems
Zip Drive = will not read disks
USB Flash Card reader = Some times mounts to /mnt/removable
sometimes to /mnt/memory_card
USB External Hard Drive = Some times mounts to /mnt/removable
sometimes to /mnt/memory_card
Sound card worked with Red Hat after setting it up. Have not been
able to get it to work With Mandrake.

With Linux after having it on my computer for over a month now I can
setup and use email apps, set up DSL internet connections (that was
not going to work with Linux according to my ISP tech support.)
and use the internet, view videos, use openoffice.org to view and
edit spread sheets and word doc's. Use Gimp some what and CYCAS CAD
program. I can delete, copy, move, and rename files and folders.

Believe it or not but this is more that most people can do with
there computers. Most people have never type any kind of command.
They send and read email but would be lost if they had to set up an
email account or an internet connection manually. They play games,
surf the web, Type a document, and maybe do some data entry.

This may be some of my problem. Where in Linux I need to type in
some thing in with all of the right switches. Or edit config files
to make it work. In Windows XP it just works there may be problems
but most of the time a few clicks of the mouse or install a update
fixes the problems. With a windows app download it, click on it to
Install, the new progame short cut is there, it works reasonable
well. Don't have to do a check sum, after download, edit config
file, make directories, move files into the new directories, and
make a short cut just to see if it might work.

Most problems with windows XP are caused by games, firewall
software, hackers, Virus, Anti-virus software, and spyware that get
installed with other app with out your approval or knowledge. The
latest big offender is Nealson rating service, yes the same people
that do TV ratings. Install this software you have a chance to win
a big screen TV. Then you are wondering why it takes 10 min. to
send 1 email, on your brand new fast computer .

Yes MS greed is one of the reasons I was hoping Linux work for me.

It seam I have read the above statement form other Linux user sounds
great. But I am yet to find out just what you are doing that i can
not do with windows xp other than read files and execute programs
made for Linux or Mac's.
There is very little flexibility?
something? it hasn't been set up to do
MS doesn't want you to do?
May be some examples would be helpful.

I do not have new components, except the 120 Gb USB External Hard
Drive. Some components I have tried are getting close to 10 years
old. Components that are not used by a lot of folks? Samsung and
U.S. Robotics made a hell of a lot of Components

I did not want just another system. I could get a mac if that is
what I wanted.
My biggest problem with Windows XP is it as become the favorite
target for low life scum. They have nothing better to do than write
viruses, worms, Trojans, or spybots and use my computer and the
computer of others to launch DOS attacks on some web server.
My computers would be fast if I did not have to run so much crap
like virus protection and firewalls. and did not have to install
security updates every week.

Reviews I have read about Linux make it sound so good but I some
time think I have been miss lead.
Linux is secure? But still I have to have a fire wall.
I read that there has been only 2 virus that would work in linux.
But still I see talk about anti virus software in this email list.
And I still need to down load and install security updates. But
cant do that until I join the Mandrake club. But do I want to pay
for one year of service for something that does not do what I was
led to believe it would do. Mandrake club sounds like it might have
some good programs. But I could not find any list of apps that
would be available if I join.
