I shouldn't come in here because I haven't been following this thread, but my via 8233 sound chip works on my MSI mobo and the modules.conf looks like this.
above snd-via82xx snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-slot-0 snd-via82xx
if that's any help.

I think the problem with default ALSA driver lies when Mandrake's hardware detection cuts 'alias' line in modules.conf in Mandrake10.0RC1. I have also encountered the problem (I managed to 'solve' it simply by switching to OSS driver). I don't think the problem lies anywhere in KDE3.2 - I have installed Mandrake10.0RC1 without any of KDE's packages (and I run IceWM).
I use kernel-2.6.3-3mdk in my Mandrake10.0RC1 install.

PS. Does anybody have drivers for Sagem800 USB modem for kernel-2.6.3-3mdk? I tried to compile 2.0.7 version from the manufacturer's site (www.sagem.com) and I fail every time (tried both kernel-source and kernel-source-stripped)?
