I am using a Hiro internal winmodem with a linmodem driver for4 the conexant
chip and I had no problem getting it up and running.

I've never had a problem with a Lucent chipped modem--every one has been a 
snap to setup (just install the driver via the rpm).  Non-Lucent chips ain't

worth the trouble, though.  And serial always works (too bad serial is on
the 
way out).
