My guess is that the BIOS works well enough to pull in the boot block, 
and then Windows uses its own drivers, whereas Linux uses the BIOS to 
some extent.

Back in 1994/5 we bought a top of the range server from Gateway. The 
specs would look silly now even if I could remember them, but there was 
no way this was going to be a workstation. We tried to install NT but 
it failed. Gateway support denied all responsibility: "We only support 
Windows 3.11". I haven't even seen a Gateway machine since, I certainly 
wouldn't buy one, and I regularly tell people to avoid them.

Bad PR: ten years and counting.
