I'd recommend you double check what modules are loading prior to
sticking a new kernel in your 9.1 system as you can break heaps of
things that are already setup and running properly; the camera is most
likely going to make use of the "usb-storage" module so make sure it's
loaded prior to plugging the camera in. You SHOULD be able to
access/mount the cam after that - you might also want to copy/paste the
list of modules that ARE loading and post them here.

Installing a new kernel isn't for the feint of heart.
