I think the updatedb is a script that runs the slocate.cron job, which is 
what actually compiles the database (or is it the other way around?).
Anyhow.  On my system I su to root and run the following command 
"/etc/cron.daily/slocate.cron"

However, as you can see slocate.cron is a cron job that is run daily, so 
the "locate" command should work regardless of whether you''ve manaully run 
slocate.cron.  Therefore, if you can't execute "locate" its possible 
something isn't install.  I did a query of my RPM database (rpm -q slocate) 
and it returned the following line:   slocate-2.1-4mdk  So check to see if 
that package is installed.
