External is safe but not necessary. There are internal modems (even PCI)
which
are full hardware modems. The problem is identifying them; most
manufacturers
don't say which models are Winmodems & which are not, even on their
websites.
For a few weeks now there has been a fellow from OK on eBay offering used
USR Model 5610's at about $50 and claiming in all caps "not winmodem."
Anyone who is really desperate is invited to make me an offer for my genuine
Hayes Smartmodem 300. It's as external as they get, & predates Windows.

But, very few winmodems have linux drivers available. I suggest checking
the
manufacturer's website or any other Linux driver site and see if a driver is
available. If not, fork up the bucks and get an external modem. It is a
safe
assumption to say that the majority of internal modems are winmodems.
