Check your cables carefully.  I have had annoyances before from
malformed '66 cables.

It is unlikely to be a timing problem, but checking cabling often brings
about miracles.  Now if you had a Fast Maxtor master and a slow WD
slave, timing would be a killing problem.

But, yes, rip open the box and if you find it works with the drives
separated, please let me know for the sake of the next person with this
problem. But even before that, remove and reseat the ide cables, or
remove and replace.
