[newbie] RPM

Hi!
I cannot install the up-dates RPM in mu linux system. Error message below.
Any idea why. How can I use the rpm install in my Linux

[root@smtp setup]# rpm -ivh imap-2000-9.i386.rpm
only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM
error: imap-2000-9.i386.rpm cannot be installed
[root@smtp setup]#
