I use Mutt... not real sure about what you mean by 'keep up', but I use
Procmail to filter lists I'm subscribed to into there own folders (I use
Maildir format instead of mbox).  Makes it easy.  There's also a
plethora of things you can configure in Mutt to make things easier.
Like in all my folders for mailing lists, I have a macro setup to mark
as deleted any message over 2 weeks old when I enter the folder, except
for messages that I've 'flagged' as important.  That makes life easier
too (and makes threading much more effective since I'm not deleting
messages as I read them. =)
