As an alternative, you could also install and check out a little app called 
Xtart.  Once installed, you can type Xtart in at the console/shell and it 
will give you the choice of any of the window managers/desktop environments 
you have installed. Simply log out (ctrl + alt + backspace is a quick way) of 
the window mgr/desktop env to return to console as long as you have yours set 
to boot to init 3.  It's on the cds.
