If you have separate /home and /opt and /usr/local partitions on your
8.1 install, just don't format them and install 8.2. MOst things will
be preserved by /home, but tarballs often install to /usr/local unless
you play with the --prefix, and commercial programs that comply with LSB
install to /opt.

Otherwise, try the upgrade course. (NOT upgrade packages only, the full
deal). There may be a few items to reconfigure, but their number will
be small.

Either way, it involves running the installer.
