MOst things will be preserved by /home, but tarballs often install to /usr/local unless you play with the --prefix, and commercial programs that comply with LSB install to /opt.
Otherwise, try the upgrade course. (NOT upgrade packages only, the full deal). There may be a few items to reconfigure, but their number will be small. Civileme Either way, it involves running the installer.
