E is so impressive that "Window Manager" hardly does it justice. I used to run E+GNOME in my Redhat days, but found I could get just about everything I wanted from E (and that was a long time ago - now it probably makes your coffee as well). Given that GNOME has so many features, it makes more sense to run it with a fairly minimal WM, unless you have a 2Gig processor and RAM coming out of your ears. KDE is a different kettle of fish, since it does both jobs (WM & DE).
