OK, look at the /etc/devfs.conf file with you favourite editor and search for
'ALSA'. I have:

--------------------------------------------------------------
# ALSA stuff
#LOOKUP snd MODLOAD ACTION snd
--------------------------------------------------------------

Note that the second line is commented out and according to the ALSA INSTALL
file the entries for ALSA should read:

--------------------------------------------------------------
LOOKUP snd MODLOAD ACTION snd
REGISTER sound/.* PERMISSIONS root.audio 660
REGISTER snd/.* PERMISSIONS root.audio 660
--------------------------------------------------------------

I think this may help your 'alsa resetting its own permissions' problem :)
Note the warning in the INSTALL file:
Warning: These lines assume that you have the audio group in your system.
Otherwise replace audio word with another group name (root for example).

I think you have to reboot for the changes to take effect. Oh, and I wonder
if it may even help gnome sound. HTH,

    -Frans
