How timely! I got called away from my project and just got back and was
working on repartitioning when I noticed you had just posted.

I'm not sure of the ATA issue ... Charles, I was just hoping it would work
without the manual changes, because newbie that I am, I am struggling
mightly as it is. It does have 40 pin cables so maybe it is ATA33 or less.
After I post this I am going to scope out the dell site to see if they list
the details for its controllers and I'll post the results again with in a
half an hour.
If the controller/drive type is going to be a problem, then, by all means,
I'm willing to try to get the manual changes made.

In any case, establishing the filesystem type did not seem too
straightforward in diskdrake (there are some buttons above that talk about
Ext2, journalised FS, etc) and the preference drop down where the choice is
Extended, primary and extended_0_85) but I think I got it set up right. I
did opt for a fewer partition scheme because I was concerned I would not get
them sized right. (This machine has one purpose ... to run that legacy app
for a few months only, so upgrade will not be an issue).

this is what I set up:

/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows (Windows C: drive)
/dev/hda2 /RHroot 9.8 gb (0x83) primary
/dev/hda3 /mnt/dos My extra FAT32 (Windows D: drive) 3.9gb
/dev/hda5 / 9.7gb Journalised FS: ext3 (0x483)
/dev/hda6 swap 392M (0x82)
/dev/hda7 swap 125M (0x82)
/dev/hda6 /opt 5.4gb (0x83) Ext2 ( I think)

Does that seem basically workable?
