I don't know what e-mail program you prefer to use at home (I assume you
use some webmail client, judging from the name "Internet Messaging
Program").

The easiest way to read root's mail is to open an xterm (in case you
don't have one), su to become root, and then start kmail, evolution or
the e-mail program of your choice (type in the name and press enter). If
you run that for the first time, it will show a few guiding windows to
get you up and running with it. You need to select the option for a
local mailfile, when asked, so the program will access the local unix
mailfile (which usually is located in /var/spool/mail).

Good luck! We'll hear whether or not you succeeded.
